A friend once said to me, “You’re a scientist and teacher – can you do a science party for my child?”
I’m a qualified teacher, have worked as a scientist, a science communicator, have presented to hundreds of thousands of students across preschools, primary, secondary and tertiary sectors, and delivered professional development sessions to teachers across Australia…
But it had never occurred to me to run a child’s science party. I was young and not particularly entrepreneurial, but I did have a passion for making science fun and exciting for young minds – so I agreed to do the party.
After a series of activities that were fun, safe, not too messy, and most importantly, had the kids captivated, involved and engaged in science – it was a huge success.
Word got around, requests flew in, and not long after, Young Scientists Birthday Parties was born.
After starting my own family, with my youngest in preschool, the preschool director asked if I could bring my science activities to the centre, and there began preschool science presentations.
Since starting 20 years ago as the original science party presenter, I’ve watched thousands of children’s faces light up as they experience hands on science and walk away feeling a sense of achievement and a new passion sparked.
